POLICE have moved to reassure residents in Musselburgh after a car was set alight in a street which was targeted by firebugs just four months ago.

Fire services were called to Beach Lane, Musselburgh, at 4am this morning after the parked vehicle went up in flames.

Police said the incident was an 'isolated case' and they would be increasing patrols in the street and surrounding area.

Beach Lane and the Fisherrow area, including the harbour, were hit by a string of deliberate fires in March.

In the space of just 24 hours there were 10 separate incidents involving a flat, boats and parked vehicles.

A man has since been arrested in connection with the March incidents.

Local CID officers are now pursuing various lines of inquiry and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Local Community Inspector Andrew Harborow said: "From our early inquiries, I'm satisfied that this is an isolated case.

"This is the first incident since a male was arrested in connection with a spate of fires in the area in March.

"I'm very aware the impact these fires had on the community and can reassure local residents that we will have an increased presence in the area over the coming days.

"Police Scotland takes a zero tolerance approach towards anyone involved in such a reckless offence and will always act on information that is reported to us.

"I urge anyone who has information relevant to our investigation to come forward immediately. Likewise, if you were aware of any suspicious activity in the area of Beach Lane on Tuesday or the preceding days or nights then please come forward."

Those with information are asked to contact police on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
