The Union flag has been restored to the top of Haddington Town House.

The flag was replaced overnight with the European Union flag in an act of solidarity by an unidentified activist.

Earlier this afternoon East Lothian Council had it removed and the Union flag put back.

Staff had earlier been told they could not replace the flag as it was too dangerous, but it is understood contractors who are currently working on the building were called in to make the change.

A council spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a European flag was being flown above the Town House in Haddington without authority. This has now been removed and replaced with the Union Flag.

"We will be investigating the matter fully and have also reported this to the police. There is ongoing renovation work at the Town House and we are working with the contractor to ensure the site is secure at all times."
