AN ANGRY protestor risked life and limb to scale to the top of Haddington Town House and fly the European Union flag in a protest against the Brexit backlash.
The unidentified activist is believed to have climbed nearly 50ft up scaffolding on the outside of the building in the dead of night to replace the Union flag with the EU flag declaring it a rebellion against "the despicable racist incidents over the last few days across the UK".
And the flag looks set to remain with East Lothian Council staff at the Town House saying they had been told not to follow in the late night rebel's footsteps because it is too dangerous.
A worker at the council building said: "We are not allowed to go up after it, we've been told we have to leave it until the scaffolding comes down."
East Lothian Council this morning appeared to be unaware of the switch which is believed to have happened last night.
However they later confirmed the flag was there adding "there is no reason for the European Union flag to be flying at the Town House."
Haddington played host to the Red Hot Chilli Pipers at the Corn Exchange, last night, a short distance from the Town House.
The unnamed protestor told the Courier he would return the Union flag to the council.
He said: "As a result of the despicable racist incidents over the last few days across the UK and the complete and utter lack of respect shown by Mr Farage to his colleagues in Europe, I believe that it is vital for our community and others to show their support and appreciation of non-UK nationals living here.
"For this reason I have gifted to the town the European flag that now flies.
"I am certain that our local councillors and others in our community also feel compelled to do everything they can to lessen the impact of actions taken by an undesirable few that deliberately seek to create friction and ill feeling with our European friends and neighbours.
"I will, of course, make arrangements for the safe return of the flag that originally flew over the building."
