ONE of the two remaining ash lagoons at Levenhall in ScottishPower’s ownership – the one closest to Prestonpans – will be developed into a haven for insects.

While the lagoon further west is being turned into a nature reserve for birds, ScottishPower has taken a different approach to Ash Lagoon 6, which lies close to Prestongrange Museum.

Craig Yorkston, from the company, said that plans were under way to protect the diverse species of invertebrates which had been discovered thriving on the site.

And he said it was unlikely the lagoon would change much in appearance in the near future as they worked to maintain the wildlife.

He said: “There are very unusual species there.

“Two years ago, we had the first sighting of the cuckoo bumble bee in Scotland at the lagoon and there are other species from the robber fly and weevil families found there.”

Mr Yorkston said that work was being done to ensure both the protection of wildlife and the amenity of the area for people living in the community or visiting.

More detailed plans are expected to be released in August.
