WELL-KNOWN Musselburgh Second World War veteran Dr Tom Renouf has died just days after receiving his MBE in a bedside ceremony at the age of 91.

Dr Renouf, who fought with the 51st Highlanders, helped organise numerous trips overseas for the Highland Division Veterans Association members to commemorate their bravery, and received France's highest military honour, the Legion d'Honneur, for his part in liberating French communities during the Second World War.

He was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours and was "overjoyed" at receiving the honour.

Michael Williams, East Lothian's Lord Lieutenant, dressed in full regalia, presented Dr Renouf with his medal in a bedside ceremony.

It was decided to carry out the formalities at Dr Renouf's home after he became ill and the prospect of him travelling to Buckingham Palace in London to receive his MBE became unlikely.

Councillor John Caldwell, who is Honorary Provost for this year's Riding of the Marches, was also present at the ceremony.

Dr Renouf was well known to county residents for his regular presence at memorial events in East Lothian.
