THIS year’s Tour of Britain cycling event will not return to East Lothian, despite big crowds attending last year’s stage.

Hundreds of people lined the route to cheer on some of the world’s top cyclists, including Tranent's Evan Oliphant, as the tour passed through East Lothian last September.

But there will be no return this time, with the only Scottish stage kick-starting the tour in Glasgow on September 4.

A Tour of Britain spokesman told the Courier: “In terms of why we’re not returning to East Lothian in 2016, unfortunately it didn’t fit in with this year’s overall route, which is generally down the west coast.

“We had great support from East Lothian Council and all of the communities along the route so I am sure the race will be back in the future."

Riders, including Team Raleigh member Oliphant, will leave Glasgow city centre and head through Ayrshire to Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, where the Scottish leg will end.
