A TEENAGER has come face to face with her own personal fear as part of a music star’s latest video.

Iona Croally appeared in Jack Garratt’s video for Surprise Yourself earlier this year after looking for the singer-songwriter’s website.

Iona, of Haddington’s Gateside Avenue, told the Courier it had been “an incredible experience”.

The teenager said: “I was planning to go to his website and I clicked on a link that I thought was the website.

“It came up with a questionnaire and I thought it was something to do with fans and being involved with a project, or a story or his album.

“The first question was asking me about fears and ambitions.

“I’ve got a fear of high winds and I would love to tell you where it came from but I have no idea.

“I’ve been to doctors, counsellors and therapy but, honestly, I have no idea where it came from.”

Iona filled in the questionnaire and a couple of weeks later, received a call from the musician’s management, who asked if she could get to London.

The 17-year-old admitted her mum was unsure about her making the trip but then, during the Easter holidays, she travelled to London.

She added: “I phoned the management back and said I was happy to do it.

“During the Easter holidays, while everyone else was revising, I was going to this.

“I got the train from Edinburgh at 8am and got picked up in a car and taken to the studio and given lunch.”

Iona was interviewed about her fear before a GoPro camera was strapped to her chest and she was put in front of a series of large fans.

She said: “I went through into the studio and there were two big wind tunnels and windmills.

“You can see them behind me in the video and they told me they were going to switch the wind on.

“They were going through the levels [turning the strength of the wind up] and asked me to tell them when I wanted to stop.

“I got about halfway through and started shaking my head and my hands for them to stop.

“Every time I did it, it got better and better and I managed to do it six or seven times before I had a break.”

Other people in the video face a variety of fears, including balloons, rollercoasters and skydiving.

Iona, who finished at Knox Academy earlier this month, said: “I’ve spoken to people before and they have asked me if I have conquered my fear.

“I say no, it is a deep-set fear and people who know me well will say I have have had it since I was tiny. I’m 18 in a month and it is still here.

“Now, if I am having a weak moment, I can look back at the video and think it is something I’ve accomplished.”
