THE decision not to allow female members at Muirfield has been widely criticised by politicians, golf stars and even television personalities.

The Honourable Club of Edinburgh Golfers took the decision on Thursday morning and, as a result, the Gullane venue will no longer be considered as a host for The Open Championship.

East Lothian MP George Kerevan said the decision was "utterly selfish" and sends "the wrong message to the rest of the world about our county."

He said: "The decision by a minority of members of the all-male Muirfield Golf Club to thwart a proposal by its majority to admit women to full membership marks a sad day for the sport in East Lothian, as well as showing a terrible disdain for democracy.

"The negative impact on the reputation of East Lothian cannot be overstated and it certainly threatens the ability of the county to attract major golfing events in the future.

"I urge the club to continue internal discussions and hold a second ballot.”

The East Lothian MP has also tabled an Early Day motion at Westminster, criticising the decision.

Meanwhile, Iain Gray, East Lothian MSP, said it was a "disaster for East Lothian", and added on Twitter: "Most Muirfield members voted for women members but now find themselves pariahs of Scottish golf. Surely they have to force a rethink."

County golf legend Catriona Matthew had her say through social media, tweeting "Well done @RandA.

"Embarrassed to be a Scottish women golfer from East Lothian after that decision."

Fellow professional Heather McRae added: "The 1st time I played Muirfield I had to sit outside after the game as I wasn't allowed in. I sat and watched a member go in with his dog!"

And Englishman Ian Poulter, who played at the last Open at Muirfield in 2013, added: "Great decision @RandA well done. About time we woke up to 2016."

And even television presenter Piers Morgan had his say, tweeting: "Shame on any male member of #Muirfield who doesn't immediately resign.

You're as sexist as your ghastly, dinosaur-ridden golf club."
