EAST Lothian residents are being warned to expect what could be "persistent and at times heavy" snow tomorrow (Friday), after a week of unsettled weather in the county.

Many of us have experienced snow showers and hail in the last few days, with a sustained spell of heavy hail hitting Musselburgh and other parts of the west of the county yesterday evening (Wednesday).

Now the Met Office has issued a yellow 'be aware' warning of snow for East Lothian, covering the period from midnight tonight until 3pm tomorrow.

Although at this stage it is unclear how badly affected East Lothian will be, and whether the precipitation will fall more as sleet or heavy rain, the Met Office warns that spells of persistent and at times heavy snow are expected for parts of the county and the wider region, starting on Thursday night and lasting into Friday.

By Friday morning, accumulations of 5-10cm are likely above about 100m, with 15cm or more possible above 200m. In East Lothian, the area around the Lammermuirs is likely to be the worst affected.

At lower levels and particularly in coastal parts of the county, an uncertain mix of rain, sleet and snow is expected, with rain likely to predominate, bringing the risk of standing water on roads.

Motorists are warned to be aware of the likelihood of dangerous driving conditions on county roads and, as a result, disruption to transport.
