DERELICT outbuildings in Haddington town centre could be transformed into housing under new plans being considered by East Lothian Council.

Previous plans, showing one house and a flat, for the site, between Market Street and the town’s Tesco store, were given approval in 2007.

Now, John Burns, of Haddington’s John Brown Court, has submitted new plans for two flats and a town house, as well as a single house.

A design and planning statement for the buildings, at 34-36 Market Street, submitted by Chalmers and Co, says: “The buildings are in an extremely poor state of repair after suffering years of neglect with only temporary repairs carried out by the previous owners rather than carrying out full renovation.

“Dry and wet rot is evident in numerous locations throughout the building and all timber will need to be removed and replaced.

“The proposals consist of two primary objectives: one is for the conversion and extension of the existing derelict buildings from commercial to form two residential flats and one town house.

“Secondly, the demolition of the existing single-storey outbuildings to the north of the site comprising a garage and a storage building.

“It is proposed to erect a single detached dwelling on this section of the site to be accessed via the pend serving the flats through from Market Street.”

The report concludes the development aims to secure the future of a listed building by “restoring and rejuvenating the site as a whole”.
