CONTROVERSIAL plans to create additional car parking at North Berwick beach have been delayed by East Lothian Council.

The council's planning committee was due to make a decision over plans to extend the car park at Marine Parade onto the beach and create additional spaces on grass at the beach end of Tantallon Terrace, later today.

But at the opening of the committee meeting this morning, councillors agreed to postpone both decisions until a later date for "further consideration".

Plans to build additional car park spaces at The Glebe will still be discussed at the meeting today.

More than 100 protestors took to the sands at North Berwick at the weekend opposing the car park proposals.

The planning committee meeting was moved from its usual venue at the Town House, Haddington, into the larger Corn Exchange venue in the town because of the large number of people expected to attend.

As well as the controversial beach car park plans, which saw more than 100 protestors take to the sands in North Berwick at the weekend, contentious plans for an anaerobic digestor in Ballencrieff were on the packed agenda.

A council spokesperson said the North Berwick beach items were deferred to "provide additional time to consider issues raised".

The next planning committee meeting is not due to be held until June 7.
