AN EAST Lothian pub has found a new four-legged fan base after introducing canine beer to its menu.

The Mercat Grill is selling 100 bottle of dog beer a month – the equivalent of three a night – to its thirsty new regulars and it has seen a 50 per cent increase in the sale of dog treats to mop up the drinks.

The Whitecraig pub introduced healthy dog beer Snuffle a year ago to its dog-friendly bar and restaurant menu.

The Belgian beer, which is non-alcoholic, is made from beef or chicken and malt barley extracts. It is non-fizzy and has become a firm favourite with customers who want to enjoy a drink with their pooches.

Graham Blaikie, Mercat Grill owner, said: “We’re increasingly seeing more and more customers coming in for a drink or to dine with their best friend – their dog. Our canine customers seem to be more sociable than ever before and certainly enjoy a fine bottle of Snuffle with our dog snacks, the healthy and nutritional Harry’s Treats.

“I think people are increasingly seeing their four-legged friends as integral family members. We also live in a society with more people living alone – so having a canine companion provides great company.

“Therefore, sharing meals, drinks, treating them to healthy, tasty snacks, designer outfits or taking them out for social occasions, is becoming more the norm.”

The Mercat Grill is well known for hosting dog-friendly events and raises funds for Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home.

Its next fun event is on Sunday when it is holding a doggy coffee morning and quiz from 9.30am to 11.30am.

Mr Blaikie said: “If it’s anything like the last one it’ll be a great fun morning with a chance to mingle with fellow, canine-loving folks and also raise money for the Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home.

“For only £10, you and your pooch will enjoy a bacon or egg roll, coffee and doggy muffins plus entry into the quiz.”
