EAST Lothian’s former MP is in the running to become an MSP – for Galloway and West Dumfries.

Fiona O’Donnell will attempt to replace Conservative Alex Fergusson MSP, who is stepping down from the role.

Ms O’Donnell will be up against SNP candidate Dr Aileen McLeod, a current South of Scotland MSP, and Finlay Carson, a local Tory councillor.

Ms O’Donnell, who is also standing as a South of Scotland candidate on Labour’s regional list, said: “I chose Galloway and West Dumfries as I think my experience of representing East Lothian and having grown up in the Highlands gives me an understanding of the issues communities face across the constituency.

“I will be speaking to plenty of voters in the campaign and listening to their concerns and hopes.

“I believe being an effective representative isn’t about where you come from but what you stand for. In this election it is clear that it is the Scottish Labour Party which stands ready to protect public services and secure a better future for the next generation.”

Ms O’Donnell was the county’s MP for a term until she was defeated by the SNP’s George Kerevan at last May’s elections.
