A TEAM from a Tranent football club were in Edinburgh on Saturday to pick up a top award from the Scottish Football Association.

Tranent and District Community Football Club (TDCFC), formed in 2013, were awarded the Quality Mark Legacy Award by the SFA.

They are the first community football club in the county to gain the accolade.

Club representatives were at Hibernian FC's Easter Road Stadium for a presentation day on Saturday and coach co-ordinator Kevin Bathgate told the Courier it was “a very proud moment”.

Mr Bathgate, the club’s SFA quality mark champion, said: “It was fantastic.

“It’s a great achievement for us and it was nice to have members of other clubs coming over and congratulating us. It is a great feeling and a very proud moment for us all.”

Mr Bathgate was joined at the event by chairman Paul McGregor and club members Phil Purves, Karen Piaskowski, Scott Glynn and Michael Dick.

And he praised the Easter Road event, which saw Jim Leishman entertain the guests.

“The event itself was really well put together and well attended," he said. “Jim [Leishman] was there to provide some entertainment and there were awards in the morning, before we had some lunch and then we got our award in the afternoon. It was a great day for the club.”

The club are getting behind the Bank of Scotland Midnight League, which gets under way across the county tomorrow (Friday).

They also hope to start an over-50s event and Mr Bathgate admits it is “a very busy time” for the club.

“We’re looking at starting walking football for the over-50s and we’re helping out at the midnight league," he added. "There won’t be coaching as such, but we’ll have people there just to let the youngsters know the facility is there for them to use.”

The Midnight League for 12 to 16-year-olds starts at Foresters Park 3G at 7.30pm this Friday.
