A MUSSELBURGH couple are at the end of their tether after being plagued by a recurring problem with dampness and mould in their home.

Justin Storrie and his partner Hollie Laidlaw, both 24, said they no longer want to live in their rented Delta View flat because they are worried about their children’s health.

Justin said there is “fur” growing under the bed his six-year-old son uses when the boy visits at weekends, although it was only bought two months ago. It will now have to be thrown away at the local civic amenity site, he added.

Christmas presents were also “ruined” after they developed ‘fur’.

Holly explained that they moved into the East Lothian Housing Association flat about two-and-a-half years ago, but within three months problems with damp started.

The couple, who have a two-year-old daughter, are tired of constantly having to fork out cash to redecorate their home because of mould.

Justin said that despite work being carried out by the housing association, dehumidifiers and fans, the dampness keeps returning.

Their bedroom needed new wallpaper and curtains because of mould on the walls and in the clothes cupboard. They have been forced to replace their mattress and bed. The living room walls have also been affected by mould.

Holly said: “I am scared to live in the flat with my children – it’s their health.

“It has been going on for too long. We are constantly chucking money at it.

“We have hit rock bottom. We don’t know what else to do.”

Justin added: “We can’t live like this. I just want out now.

“I won’t have my son sleep in that bedroom any more.

“We only put up the wallpaper in July and it’s ruined. The curtains were cream and now they are green.”

A spokesman for East Lothian Housing Association said: “We are aware that an issue connected with dampness exists in this property.

“In February 2015 we had a specialist carry out an inspection and carried out repairs in March and April.

“In early December we had further contact from Mr Storrie as it appears that another problem has arisen.

“The cause of the latest problem was not immediately obvious and a further visit has been arranged for this week to identify the cause of this. Once we have done this, we will ensure that everything necessary is done to rectify any defects.

“In the meantime, we are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to Mr Storrie and his partner.”
