PRESTONPANS football starlet Matthew Knox scored past a World Cup winning goalkeeper during his trial with Manchester United this week.
The 16-year-old is at the club’s Aon Training Complex as he takes part in a week-long trial at the English Premier League giants.
He was an unused substitute for Livingston on Saturday as they lost 4-1 to Rangers at Ibrox at the weekend, but travelled south on Monday.
During his first day with United, the teenager netted a goal in training past World Cup winner Victor Valdes.
His dad, also Matthew, was thrilled to see his son catching the eye at United.
Matthew Senior told Courier Sport: “I’m very proud of him.
“He trained today and he scored a cracker into Victor Valdes – not many 16-year-old kids from this area will be able to say that!”
During his time with the club, Knox, a former pupil at Preston Lodge before signing professional terms on his 16th birthday on December 22, has rubbed shoulders with club legends.
“He’s met Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt – they both knew who he was,” said his father. “Giggs took a lot of time to speak to Matthew, and he’s seen most of the first team squad.
“He sat beside Juan Mata and he was chatting to him as well.”
Knox has already previously been on trial with Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham and has also attracted interest from Chelsea.
He has impressed on his trials, scoring for each of the clubs, including in a North London derby practice match for Spurs against arch-rivals Arsenal.
The midfielder became Livingston’s youngest ever player late last year when he made his debut on Boxing Day, just four days after turning 16.
Knox, of Prestonpans’ Laburnum Arch Court, had earlier caught the eye for Livi with performances in friendlies against Stenhousemuir and Spanish La Liga club Real Sociedad.
It is understood that United staff will assess his level during his trial this week and then decide whether to follow up their interest.
