Jazmine Tomlinson made history as she became the first woman to win the New Year Sprint in its 147-year history.

The 18-year-old, a student at Borders College, saw off Ryan Houten and Keiran Reilly to second and third places, respectively, as she became the first female winner.

In a tight finish, the teenager had to wait in front of a packed Musselburgh Racecourse crowd to find out she had made history.

And after her victory was confirmed, she said: "It was a really close finish but it was a great feeling to win in front of more than 5,000 people - it’s by far the biggest crowd I’ve raced for.

“It’s a great venue too and a brilliant atmosphere.

“There won’t be too many celebrations as I don’t drink but it’s amazing to be the first girl to win this as everyone wants to win the New Year Sprint.”

Cameron Tindle had been touted among the favourites for the race, but he finished eighth in the final after coming from a back mark of two metres.

He did, though, win the invitation sprint.

This year's race also saw a record crowd for the annual event, with 5,400 people packed into the county racecourse for New Year's Day action.

And Frank Hanlon, race promoter, who oversaw his 25th sprint this year, believes it was "only a matter of time" before a woman was triumphant in the race.

He said: "We have been waiting for about the last 15 years for a female winner and it was only a matter of time before the men’s hold on this historic race was shattered.

“With a record crowd at Musselburgh Racecourse, Jazmine couldn’t have picked a better time to enter the history books.”

The heats and finals of the supporting events were staged at nearby Meadowmill athletics track two days earlier.

There was joy for Davie Rae who won veterans 90 metres, while the open 90 metres was won by Reilly

Cal McLennan was first home in the open 800 metres, and Kobe Stevens triumphed in the 1600 metres from William Bates.

Rebecca Grieve, Edinburgh, completed a memorable double in the youths sprints by winning both the 90 metres and 60 metres finals.
