A MUSSELBURGH man took a “penguin plunge” into the icy waters of Fisherrow Harbour to help community groups.

John Thorburn, 58, Master of Lodge St John Fisherrow 112, successfully carried out his pledge to swim across the harbour dressed in a dinner suit. He was watched by about 50 spectators and well-wishers who had gathered to support him.

His recent feat is expected to raise more than £2,500 which will be dispersed amongst Fisherrow Nursery, Musselburgh Boys’ Brigade and other local charities.

Last year, Mr Thorburn raised £5,000 to help men and women injured in recent conflicts. He held an auction at the masonic lodge for an array of prizes, including a weekend rail trip to London with a stay in a hotel and other events.
