A TROUBLE-plagued pub in Musselburgh reopens its doors next week as the first in a new line of cafe bistros in the United Kingdom.

The Burgh has been re-incarnated as Brewed and Baked – a new licensed coffee shop concept from owners Punch Taverns

The firm, which owns more than 4,000 pubs and bars across the UK, invested £125,000 into overhauling the premises from a traditional pub to its new image.

Plans to replace The Burgh with a new business were revealed at an East Lothian Licensing Board meeting in the summer, where the council’s licensing standards officer said changes were proposed because of “long-term serious problems association with the operation of these premises as a bar”.

Owners Punch Taverns successfully applied for the new cafe bistro to be allowed to serve alcohol but insisted that the refurbishment would be more than a “lick of paint”.

Steve McGowan from Punch said the new Brewed and Baked coffee house was the first of its kind and would be closely monitored as it is expected to become the model for a chain of similar venues across the country. He said: "Because it is the first it will be closely monitored not just by area managers but directors of the company.”

The bistro, on High Street, has announced its opening date is Monday, and already has a website up and running promoting the new business.

It described Brewed and Baked as a “family-run coffee house with the slight twist of being a licensed premises”.
