BIG-hearted fundraisers are continuing to help Tranent youngster Rocco Wood, with nearly £1,500 raised in just two weeks.

Six-year-old Rocco, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, desperately needed a new trike and standing frame to help him walk unaided.

His mum Louise was overwhelmed when an appeal in her home town of Tranent saw her reach her goal of £4,500 to buy the specialist equipment last month.

But it has not stopped there for generous supporters of the Wood family, with more events raising money which will help the family ensure they can provide a safe and secure shed to house the trike once it arrives.

Rocco’s condition affects his motor functions on all four limbs and he underwent a double hip reconstruction in May this year to help his mobility.

The next step was the specialist equipment, which will help keep his legs moving and allow him to go out and play with friends.

Louise, 29, of Waggonway, said: “Rocco’s been going to hydrotherapy twice a week. The tricycle will mean he will be able to go out and play with his friends and it will help his legs and his therapy.

“There is no way I’d have been able to afford it without everyone’s support and I'm so grateful and overwhelmed by the amazing efforts of people.”

Since Rocco’s story appeared in the Courier, Tranent Rotary Club held Rocco’s Race Night on Friday, October 30, at East Lothian Co-op Bowling Club in the town and raised £430, and Rocco received a cheque for £200 from Tranent Belters.

A Hallowe’en sponsored walk over the Forth Road Bridge with Allied Health support staff on Saturday, October 31, raised £328 and saw manager Frankie Krawiec and his team join Rocco in some scary costumes.

And an Asda bag packing event at the Tranent store on Saturday, raised an additional £372, while there are still events taking place.

On Friday, November 27 in the Brig Inn in the town, Rocco’s Snowman Drive and Disco will be held.

And then on Friday, December 4, Rocco’s Thank You Party will be held at the Co-op Bowling Club.

Rocco’s new trike has been ordered from Canada and is expected to arrive in time for Christmas.
