AN AIR and sea search was launched for a Forth kayaker who failed to return home overnight - leading relatives to worry for his safety.

Kinghorn RNLI lifeboat was called out on Wednesday morning, it has emerged, to search for the paddler who had launched from Prestonpans the previous evening.

In poor visibility due to fog, the crew searched from Kinghorn to Inchkeith and across to Prestonpans.

The kayaker’s car was still at Prestonpans and, after he was not located on the initial search, the mission was extended to involve a Royal Navy helicopter, Queensferry lifeboat and Fisherrow Coastguard.

Shortly afterwards, a local yacht radioed in to say that the kayaker had stayed with them at Inchkeith harbour overnight, and that they had then taken him towards Musselburgh, where he paddled the final leg home.

The Royal Navy helicopter, Rescue 177, was tasked to search this area and quickly located the man paddling towards Prestonpans at about 12.45pm on Wednesday. He was safe and well and Queensferry Lifeboat escorted him to shore.

Mike Chalmers, Kinghorn Lifeboat helm, said: "This kayaker had launched last Tuesday night and we were firstly called out on Tuesday night to search for him after a member of the public became concerned that his car was still at the launch site; however, he was contacted by phone and he advised that he planned to camp on Inchkeith Island overnight. We were therefore stood down, and returned to station.

"On Wednesday morning we were again called out after he had not returned home. A large search was launched but fortunately he was located after two hours, safe and well."

"We would always advise people who are using the Forth for leisure purposes, such as kayaking, to ensure they are properly prepared for the trip they plan to make.

"This includes having means of calling for help, particularly a VHF radio, good clothing, flares, and any other equipment for the conditions. Mobile phones are not the best solution as they are generally not waterproof, the batteries are limited, and only the person you are calling can hear you if you get into trouble.

"We would always recommend that you tell people where you are going, and when you expect to be back."
