Police are appealing for witnesses after a significant quantity of lead was stolen from a church roof in Aberlady.
The theft happened sometime overnight on Wednesday, September 30, at Aberlady Parish Church on West Main Street.
Contractors, who had been working on the roof, discovered that a thief or thieves had stolen strips of lead worth around £1000.
The church received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in February this year of £83,200 towards restoring the main building and its tower.
An investigation is now underway in an effort to trace those responsible and police are asking anyone who has information to come forward.
Sergeant Scott Nicolson, Police Scotland, said: “This theft would most likely have required the use of a vehicle in order to transport the heavy load.
“I am therefore very keen for anyone who noticed any suspicious activity at, or around, the church overnight on Wednesday to come forward immediately.”
Those with information can contact police 101 or, alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
