ROAD restrictions will come into place from 7am tomorrow as final preparations for the demolition of Cockenzie Power Station's famous chimneys get underway.

Demolition experts Brown and Mason will undertake final checks of the site to ensure public safety before the controlled explosions are carried out at 12noon.

Thousands of people are expected to line vantage points in the surrounding area both on land and water, for a view of the demolition.

The 149-metre high concrete chimneys will be brought down together with a second explosion planned immediately afterwards, to bring down the turbine hall which sits in front of them.

Roads leading to the power station will be closed at 9am with some restrictions coming into effect earlier in the morning (see below).

East Lothian Courier:

The button will be pressed by North Berwick man Donald McCulloch, who won a raffle held to raise money for local causes.

Peopl are being urged to plan where they will view the demolition in advance and some have already been out scoping the best vantage points with reports of people heading to various locations with camera equipment to take test pictures ahead of the big day.

Police boats are being brought in to patrol the waters beyond the chimneys to make sure people who take to the Firth of Forth for a view do not stray too close.

A 300-metre exclusion zone has been imposed on the waterfront.
