A quartet of Tranent fundraisers are preparing to climb Scotland’s 10 highest mountains to raise money for charity.

The four-man team, Liam Law, Max Newcombe, Matthew Martin and Glenn Fergusson, are preparing to climb the 10 mountains next weekend, starting in the early hours of next Saturday (September 26), while raising money for three charities - Scottish SPCA (SSPCA), Teenage Cancer Trust and Help for Heroes.

The Tranent fundraisers will kick off their epic fundraiser, which will see them on their feet for more than 30 hours, by climbing to the summit of Ben Nevis.

And despite the challenge facing them, they “can not wait to start” the epic fundraiser, which has already seen them raise more than £1,600.

The climb will see the quartet trek for more than 70 kilometres and ascendd over 5,800 metres for the challenge, called Xtreme Walkies.

They have taken on fundraising in the past, but have pushed themselves for this year’s challenge.

Liam Law, one of the team, told the Courier: “We’ll be starting in the cairngorms taking on the first 5 mountains, this should hopefully take us around 15 hours to complete. Then a drive to Fort William taking us in to the Sunday to take on the next four.

“After that a drive to the finish line to take on Ben Lawers. We will be hoping to do this in two days but its hard to estimate such a challenge as there isn’t a lot of guidelines for something this size. Should be well over 30 hours of trekking all depending on visibility and weather conditions.”

He said: “It’s our third year fundraising for charity, so we thought it would be a good idea to make it three times harder than before.

“We’ve chosen a not-so heard of challenge which will see us climb the ten highest mountains in Scotland.

“Last year was a gruelling task but this looks agonising.

“Matthew and Glenn haven’t done any mountains before so I think they might get a fright early on but we will push through. We have had a huge support so far, especially from local businesses that ten where giving the chance to have their own Mountain for their sponsor.”
