Businesses and individuals from all over East Lothian pulled out all the stops to ensure that the 2015 Bass Rock Supper event in aid of local charity Leuchie House was an unqualified success.

The organisers estimate that more than £12,000 was raised for Leuchie through the special event, held on Saturday.

More than a hundred people took to the waves as part of a flotilla sailing round the Bass Rock before heading to a feast of local delicacies provided by top cooks and producers in Halflands Barns, just outside North Berwick. Entertainment was provided by a local jazz band, Spatz & Co, and the ever-popular Lismore Ceilidh Band.

Leuchie’s CEO, Mairi O’Keefe, said: “It was a truly magical night. To see everyone working together for a common cause was awe-inspiring.

“The food, the weather, the entertainment, even a fly-past – no one who was there will ever forget it.

“We were able to take one of Leuchie’s regular guests, Peter, who is staying with us, and he couldn’t believe the lengths people were prepared to go to, pitching in to raise the funds which Leuchie so desperately needs to ensure we can provide the quality of respite breaks our guests deserve. The fact it was held on Leuchie’s fourth birthday was the icing on the cake.” The Bass Rock Supper dates back to a historical annual gathering organised by local farmers who, after a trip round the Bass Rock, would enjoy a hearty feast of local produce. This tradition was resurrected by local fundraiser Tommy Dale with the support of the local farming and business community.

Following this year’s event, Tommy said: “Enormous thanks go to all the local farmers and businesses who gave their time and support to make this such as successful event.

“The art auction was a great addition to our fundraising efforts, with the successful bid for a Damien Hirst limited edition print coming from Paris.

“We were also so grateful to Sheila Lochhead and her family for so generously donating two of her late husband’s artworks. These were sold to local families for over £1,000 each, with every penny raised going to Leuchie House.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to all the skippers who headed out on the boats, despite quite a swell!

“A special mention should also go to the Braveheart skipper, who saved the day by offering to take people at the last minute.” The feast consisted of a pig, a sheep, 20 pheasants, 40 lobsters, 100 mackerel and 40 kilos of potatoes from Luffness.

This was accompanied by Belhaven smoked cheese, salads from Knowes Farm, Ice Delight and strawberries and cream from Fife – all washed down with wine from Lockett Brothers in North Berwick, Thistly Cross Cider and ale from Archerfield Brewery.

Local farmers sponsored the event by each donating one ton of grain to the value of £130 and Tommy said: “We couldn’t have done this without the support of all these people and it was great to see it all come together for Leuchie House.”
