EAST Lothian is well represented in a humorous new book which details the history of Scottish Football League side Berwick Rangers.

'The Lone Rangers: An English Club's Century in Scottish Football', by Tom Maxwell, features a foreword by Wallyford-born Hearts boss Jim Jefferies and covers the finest moments in the Borderers' history, many of which involved a strong East Lothian presence.

Unsurprisingly, the club's legendary victory over Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Cup in 1967 takes pride of place, and two of the key figures in that victory hailed from the county:manager Jock Wallace, from Wallyford, and captain and right-back Gordon Haig, from Ormiston.

Gordon, now 67, will attend the official launch of the new book next month and fondly recalls his time at Berwick, including that incredible cup upset at Shielfield Park, when following victory he was hoisted onto the shoulders of jubilant fans who invaded the pitch to celebrate.

"There were about 14,000 people in a ground which only has a capacity of about 2,500 so you can imagine how packed it was," he told the Courier.

"It was just a really fantastic experience.

"The most difficult part of the day was trying to get off the park at the finish!

"The jersey I wore that day was in a museum in Glasgow for a while complete with all the rips from the fans!

"I still get absolutely loads of talk about the match, even from youngsters. It's absolutely unbelievable. I do get a bit fed up at times because I played 300-odd games for Berwick and everyone remembers just that one!" Despite the glory of that game, Gordon, who lives on Moffat Road with wife Elaine, a former advertising manager at the Courier, still treasures his debut for Ormiston Juniors as a teenager as the proudest moment of his career, though his memories of Berwick remain fond.

He recalls from his time with the club: "I remember a quote Jim Jefferies made as a young lad when he used to come watch us. He said he'd never seen so many people stretchered off - and that was just our training!" 'The Lone Rangers', published by Northumbria Press (www.northumbriapress.co.uk), is on sale from August 8.
