Students’ Friday night fun and frolics at PL

Preston Lodge 20 v 42 Edinburgh Uni

FRIDAY night’s match against Edinburgh University saw PL again perform sporadically and not well enough to bring any reward.

PL went behind by three points early on but a penalty kick to touch in the corner allowed the home side to exert good pressure before a scoring pass to Jonathan Brash was touched down.

Univerisity full back and goal kicker, Matt Bennet, regained the lead for his side with an excellent penalty from 35m but PL came back with a spell of driving rugby that would be rewarded with a penalty for Patterson to convert to make the score 8-6 after 15 minutes.

A try-saving tackle by Brash halted a surging move from the visitors but PL were adjudged offside. And, having opted for the scrum, the quick University ball was good enough to create space and score.

The conversion extended the lead to 8-13 a few minutes later an almost indentical break had extended the gap to 12 points.

PL were forced to concede a string of penalties and Bennet converted one from 45m out to make the half-time score 8-23 in favour of the students.

And they were right back on the attack in the second half, scoring two tries in a minute, with the PL defence posted missing to make the score 8-37.

PL began to show off their own pace and handling skills to put the university under pressure. Luke Tait was first to the fore with a good break into the 22 and then a Patterson penalty to 5m led to a period of intense pressure near the visitors’ line.

The forwards controlled the ball through several scrums and short penalties until, eventually, Connor was able to burrow over for a much-deserved try.

The students were on the backfoot for this period and their frustration led to a number of penalties before the referee’s patience ran out and he sent one of their players to the sin-bin. This one-man advantage led to some of the best rugby of the season from PL.

The replacement full back set off down the left wing on a 50m break.

The move brokedown and ball was passed out to Patterson who sent a cross-kick the entire width of the field to right-winger Brash who crossed over for his second try of the afternoon.

But the students had the last word with a try in the last minute that made the final score 20- 42.
