Musselburgh Athletic 2 v 2 Newtongrange Star, Arniston Rangers 4 v 2 Musselburgh Athletic

After satisfactory performances in four pre-season friendlies, Burgh began their League Cup campaign last Wednesday evening with a visit from Premier League rivals Newtongrange Star.

The dreadful weather dampened the enthusiasm of both players and spectators.

Although the sides shared four goals, the game turned out to be more of an endurance test than entertainment for the hardy fans who turned up.

A goalless first half was largely forgettable, with both teams relying mainly on set-pieces.

But the match improved after the break. The visitors went in front when Thomson’s long-range volley deceived Burgh keeper Ronnie McPherson.

But a generous penalty award allowed Musselburgh to draw level through Mathu King.

As the final whistle approached, Chris King put Davie McGlynn’s men ahead.

But the referee pointed to the spot again in injury time , penalising Burgh this time. Thomson converted the penalty to earn Newtongrange a point.

On Saturday Olive Bank was due to play host to Burgh’s tie with groundsharing partners Arniston Rangers.

But incessant rain combined with the impact of Wednesday evening’s game on the playing surface led to the game’s postponement.

The match was quickly rescheduled for Monday evening at Arniston’s Newbyres Park. Burgh went down to a disappointing 4-2 defeat to a young Arniston team.

Dunbar United were Burgh’s visitors on Wednesday evening.
