Musselburgh Athletic 1 v 1 Arniston Rangers

Musselburgh’s final Premier League match saw them up against Arniston Rangers in a meaningless fixture, with neither promotion nor relegation an issue for either side.

Prospects of an Olive Bank thriller did not look encouraging, and so it proved. Matters weren’t helped by an exceptionally pernickety performance from the referee, who did not give play a chance to flow.

Neither side created much in a fairly dull first half, although Musselburgh at least had several attempts on goal which was more than could be said for their visitors.

CJ Osazuwa hit a shot over the bar, and a Turnbull effort was saved comfortably by visiting keeper Baillie.

With 40 minutes played, Burgh went ahead through Mathu King, who was well placed to capitalise after Paul Currie’s perfectly-delivered corner was headed towards goal by Osazuwa, and Baillie could only parry.

A good Arniston move gave Laird the chance to equalise early in the second half, but he shot ball narrowly wide.

Turnbull and King had good opportunities for Burgh that came to nothing, while Arniston’s improved on their first half performance.

A brilliant save from Ronnie McPherson prevented an equaliser from McCallum. But the Arniston man later turned provider with a tempting cross into the path of Howitt, who equalised with 15 minutes remaining.

A point apiece was fair, but Burgh felt that the refereeing performance went a long way to spoiling the game, and the dismissal of Paul Currie with a few minutes left seemed especially harsh.
