An American golf organisation has joined forces with Gullane Golf Club’s head professional Alasdair Good to launch its first European Championship for young players.

The U.S. Kids Golf Foundation has recognised the excellence of East Lothian’s historic courses, by staging its first event outside North America, in the county later this month.

The tournament has attracted the best young players from 34 countries and will be held at Craigielaw, Kilspindie, Luffness and Gullane golf clubs from May 27 to 30.

Entrants will be boys and girls aged seven to 14,

Alasdair Good, who is also founder of Wee Wonders, the leading competition for young players in Great Britain and Ireland, said: “Hosting 500 young players will be a memorable occasion for all.

“The opportunity to play on some of Scotland’s finest links courses will be an experience that they will surely want to repeat.”

The courses being used for the competition will be shortened to allow for age and gender.

The field for the three-day, stroke-play tournament will include players who finished among the leaders in the 2007 world championship and the 2007 HSBC Wee Wonders Championships.

The U.S. Kids Foundation conducts more tournaments for young golfers than any other American organisation.

Its eighth annual Golf World Championship, held at Pinehurst, North Carolina, last year, attracted more than 1,100 players from 33 countries.

President Dan Van Horn said:“Our experience shows that golf’s popularity shows no age barriers or geographic boundaries.”
