The East Lothian Leagues swung into action last Friday evening with five-in-a-row Division 1 champions Port Seton getting off the mark with a comfortable 6-2 home win over last season’s Division 2 runners-up Ormiston.

West Barns paraded new signing David Sked in their 6-2 home triumph over Macmerry, while Tranent and East Linton were involved in a ding dong battle at Polson Park before both sides settled for a 4-4 share of the spoils.

Aberlady opened up their campaign with a hard fought 5-3 home win over EL-Coop and were denied full points by a sensational skipping performance from the visitors’ Scott Dodds, playing his first competitive match for nearly four years.

Meanwhile, two Division 2 clubs secured huge last minute signings before the transfer window closed last Friday night.

Officials at Gifford have confirmed they have secured the services of record five times world indoor singles champion Alex Marshall and he was set to make his full debut on Wednesday against Elphinstone.

Haddington made a last minute double-swoop and beat off interest from Ormiston to capture the signatures of Steven Glen and Colin Glen. Both made their debut last week in a 5-3 home win over Dunbar.

The league action continues tonight (Friday) and there was also a full round of fixtures on Wednesday evening.

In tonight’s action, veteran campaigner Willie Wood makes his first start for new club West Barns as they play host to Castlepark.

Defending champions Port Seton welcome East Linton, while EL-Coop will hope to make full use of home advantage as they entertain Ormiston.

Polson Park is the venue for the clash between Tranent and Macmerry.

Aberlady have a free week.

All club match secretaries are requested to ensure that all league and cup results, including shots aggregate, are phoned into ELBA Match Secretary Keith Fender on 01620-860217 or via text message 07786855808 immediately after each game.

All result sheets must arrive by Tuesday or offending clubs may face a hefty fine.

The Scottish Under 25 Counties Championship opens on Sunday, and former champions East Lothian begin their bid to reclaim the title from holders Edinburgh & Leith. The match takes place at Elphinstone with a 2pm start.

The county side suffered a disappointing campaign last year but team co-ordinator Keith Fender is confident that his latest talent packed squad will fair much better this time around.

Port Seton ace Derek Oliver will captain a team that includes fellow junior caps David Sked and Paul McLaren. He said: “I feel honoured and pleased to be entrusted with the captaincy of such a strong bunch of players and if I can get them to punch their weight in the campaign ahead then the top prize can be ours once again.”

The full line-up is: E Dickson (Macmerry), C Darcy-Burt (Elphinstone), T Heron (Tranent), A. Dunleavey (Aberlady, skip); F Pringle (Aberlady), C Brogan (Dunbar), C Gordon (West Barns), C Fallen (ELCO, skip); S Thomson (ELCO), D Pitt (ELCO), S Thorburn (West Barns), S Cochrane (ELCO, skip); A Pringle (Aberlady), G Fender (East Linton), D Sked (West Barns), D Oliver (Cockenzie & Port Seton, capt/skip) ; S.Rutherford (Castle Park), C.Blair (East Linton), J.Blair (Haddington), G.Lusk (ELCO, skip); M.Riding (Elphinstone), S.Mackie (Elphinstone), G.Thomson (East Linton), P.McLaren (ELCO, skip).
