Close shave for Rollo

Large crowds turned out in sunny, but cold, weather to watch the first motorcycle race meeting of the year at East Fortune last weekend.

There were plenty of thrills and spills for the spectators to enjoy with local rider Stuart Rollo crashing out at a chicane in the first lap of his final race, wrecking his bike in the process. Fortunately, he was uninjured.

Rollo gained a third and two fourth places in the Senior Superstocks class.

There was a record entry in all classes, some competitors having travelled from as far away as Ireland, South Wales and the South East of England.

All four of the 1,000cc Senior Superstock races were won convincingly by the 2006 Scottish champion Torquil Paterson.

Marti Brown, the wheelie-king of East Linton, has moved to the Formula Melville class for this season and his best finish was a second, beaten by Irish Superbike champion, Kirk Jamison.

Jamison won all of the Formula Melville races, one by a huge margin of over 19 seconds.

Colvin Denholm from Haddington, riding his Early Stocks bike, was the most successful local racer of the weekend with three second places.

A huge grid of sidecars provided very fast, flowing action with all four races being won in fine style by Gordon Shand with passenger Tony Belsey.

County sidecar racer David Wrinn’s passenger, Erich Schonwalder, was suffering with an arm injury that hampered the pair’s performances.

But they came away with a second, a third and a 12th place in their races.

The next race meeting at East Fortune, hosted by the NEMCRC club from the North East of England, will be over the weekend of May 18 and 19.

I was at the racing last weekend at East Fortune and it was SUPERB, with massive crowds and a full car park and I don't understand why the Courier gives so little coverage and no photographs of the bikes.

It's a far more exciting sport to watch than bowls or golf so Courier sports editors, please give it the coverage it deserves. After all last week and this you had a full page of bowls photos and not a single motorbike or sidecar was to be seen!!!!!
