Burgh’s promotion hopes thwarted
Bo’ness United 2 v 1 Musselburgh Athletic
This result means that it will be another season at least before Burgh can contemplate Superleague football.
Bo’ness look certain to return to the top division a year after relegation, but they were second best throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Musselburgh’s midfield performed superbly, with Hay slotting in like he’d never been away.
Chris King, Paul Tansey, CJ Osazuwa and Hay himself all had chances to break the deadlock, but none of them were able to find the target.
Despite such a dominant performance the half time whistle arrived with the game still goalless.
Osazuwa and Hay came close as the second half progressed in much the same way as the first.
But Burgh’s luck finally turned after 65 minutes, when Chris King struck a free kick beyond veteran home keeper Burns after Tansey had been brought down.
Burgh’s lead lasted just nine minutes, when Bo’ness’ Australian substitute Thornton equalised when he converted a cross from the right.
Three minutes later Wes Mitchell, a rock at the heart of the Musselburgh defence, mis-hit his clearance over the head of his keeper Ronnie McPherson.
Thornton nipped in to guide the ball home.
