Scarlets triumph at North Berwick
THE 49th North Berwick Sevens saw Haddington continue their winning streak, by securing their second piece of silverware in as many weeks.
The Scarlets were still fresh from an impressive performance in last weekend’s Preston Lodge Sevens where they won an exciting final against county rivals Musselburgh
Spectators flocked to Recreation Park last Saturday hoping for a sunlit afternoon of fast paced rugby.
They were not to be disappointed with 15 teams competing for the Stewart Cup, with those knocked out in the first round competing in the Plate.
In his column in the tournament programme, North Berwick chairman Hugh Wright referred to the club’s tradion of developing the players of tomorrow.
This was evident by the fact that the hosts were able to field three teams on Saturday.
The fans would have been impressed by the performance of the President’s Sevens, this year’s wild card side, who were knocked out in the semi-final of the Cup.
In the first round, Haddington, North Berwick, Musselburgh Gala Y.M, and Gala comfortably overcame their opposition, with Dalkeith edged out by Hawick Linden 20-19. Owing to a last minute call off Ross High automatically advanced to the second round, only to be caught cold by a rampant Presidents Sevens, losing 26-14.
North Berwick met Musselburgh in a tight contest, with both sides putting on fine performances, with North Berwick victorious by 26-24.
Haddington made short work of Hawick Linden, 32-5, and then demolished Edinburgh Accies by 40 points to meet the hosts in the final.
In the cup final, all eyes were on the star players on each side, Andrew Scott for North Berwick, and Callum Mark for Haddington.
Both proved inspirational, working well with the ball in hand. Scott showed his athleticism and Mark put on a fine all-round performance.
However, despite the home side’s best efforts, Haddington proved too much for them to contain, winning 31-17.
In the Plate, two Hawick teams competed in the final. Harlequins won the match against rivals Hawick YM by 28-14.
Both sides put on a fine show for the spectators.
