Bowls clubs first fling
THE first jacks of the new season were thrown at bowling greens across the county last weekend.
Members of Macmerry Bowling Club watched their oldest member, Alex Jackson, address the jack. Alex will be 90-years-old in October.
Another elder statesmen, Bill Slight (pictured), had the privilege of opening the new season at Prestongrange Bowling Club.
Bill Fenton addressed the jack at the opening of Longniddry Bowling Club.
Meanwhile, East Lothian selectors are due to meet shortly to select a side for the opening Scottish Counties Championship match on Saturday, May 10, when Borders provide the opposition at Haddington. Any player who has been unavailable before, but is now available for selection, is urged to contact ELBA secretary Arthur Bellany without delay on 01875 812463.
The last youth tournament of the indoor season ended in failure for East Lothian IBC youth section.
They were unable to qualify from their section at the East Fife Top Ten tournament.
However, they still came home with trophies after finishing runners-up in the East of Scotland Junior League. The presentation was made to the team by Lindsay Crombie, the Scottish Young Bowlers president.
Finally, pupils from East Lothian primary schools will take part in a finals day at Meadowmill on Thursday (April 24).
The tournament is the culmination of this year’s bowls initiative, which received a grant from East Lothian Council and was organised by the coaching members of Scottish Bowls Coaching Committee.
The aim is to encourage the young players to become the county’s star bowlers of the future.
