Tranent impress but lose to single goal

Tranent Juniors 0 v 1 Sauchie Juniors

Foresters Park boss Davie Lees had to lift his players after a disappointing performance the previous week at Haddington. He made just one change to his starting 11, with a trialist striker replacing Daryl Fraser.

Tranent faced another testing 90 minutes against a Sauchie side harbouring hopes of a late South Division title challenge.

Sauchie as expected did most of the pressing, but the home were strong in defence and comfortably kept the visitors at bay in the early stages.

On the odd occasion that Sauchie did get a sight of goal, they found Craig Cunningham in good form.

Tranent operated an offside trap that frustrated the opposition time and again. They deserved to be level after a goalless first half despite finding it hard to create their own chances.

The second half continued in much the same vein, with Tranent limited to the occasional break forward as Sauchie struggled to make clear-cut chances.

The opening goal finally came for the visitors after 75 minutes. A free-kick was awarded against Tranent sub Dan McFarlane just outside the penalty area.

Sauchie’s McGuigan sent a swerving shot around the defensive wall which Cunningham could only get a hand to. He parried the ball into the path of Wright who tucked it away from close range.

Tranent pushed forward in the later stages as they tried desperatley for an equaliser, but despite a couple of openings they couldn’t find a way past the Sauchie defence.

This was an impressive performance from Tranent against strong opposition and will give them confidence going into tomorrow (Saturday’s) St Michael’s Cup tie away to Arniston Rangers.
