Preston Lodge 52 v 12 Loch Lomond

PRESTON LODGE took another step on the high road to Murrayfield, by beating Loch Lomond in the quarter-final of the Scottish Hydro Electric Bowl at the Pennypit last Saturday.

A big crowd, on the appropriately named ‘Superheroes Day’,was treated to a thrilling 10 try display by the home side – five of them coming from Ali Wood.

Wood, aided by the rest of the PL backs, scored his first two tries within six minutes Then a quick tap penalty by Niall MacDonald set him up for another touchdown.

After 12 minutes, Patterson sent a deft chip towards the try line and Euan Thayne was on hand to scoop up the ball and cross the line for his first try of the season and make the score 15-0.

Then a textbook line out, followed by a driving maul, allowed Stuart McLean to score. Calum Wilson then went over for the home side’s fifth try.

Towards the end of the half Ali Wood scored two more tries.

A 35-0 half-time lead suggested the result was a formality. But Loch Lomond scored right from the kick off. A minute later, they scored again.

It was left to Paul Voy and John Morrison to steady the ship for the home side.

Patterson kept a cool head after 52 minutes and he was able to draw the defence before sending a perfectly timed pass to Wood who completed his try scoring heroics for the afternoon.

The home back row were dominant as Scott and Thayne protected the ball and the ninth try was scored by Morrison and from close range.

Graeme Patterson moved to centre and he was instrumental in setting up the final try.

He made the space for Chris Dixon to finish off a great move by running round unopposed to score under the posts.

Patterson coolly completed the scoring with the simplest of conversions.

But for a slack five minutes in the second half, this was a highly polished performance by Preston Lodge who await the semi-final draw.
