Young Scarlets turn on style in final win
• Champions: Haddington under-16 rugby team celebrate their victory against Forrester in the Edinburgh and District Cup Final played at Meadowmill
Haddington 34 v 10 Forrester
A HAT-TRICK of tries by speedster Kyle Adams helped Haddington claim the silverware in the Edinburgh and District Under-16s’ Cup Final at Meadowmill.
The game was played at a high tempo from the first whistle, with the county side taking the initiative from the off.
Playing with the wind in the first half, Haddington dominated both territory and possession, and it was only a short time before Euan Bowen kicked his first points, converting a well-struck penalty from 35 metres.
The pressure that Haddington imposed on Forrester was relentless and it was only a matter of time before Haddington scored their first try through Fraser Taig, which Bowen converted.
Forrester rallied briefly, and were awarded a penalty under the Haddington posts which they converted.
Any penetration into the Haddington half was pinned back with some excellent tactical and line kicking by Bowen. A try came from Kyle Adams on the wing for Haddington, an out-andout flier and a deadly finisher. It was converted by Bowen.
The Haddington back-line continued to attack at pace, and following some slick handling from Taig at outside centre, Adams claimed his second try.
The half-time whistle couldn’t have come soon enough for Forrester, who hoped that the wind might be able to assist them in the second half.
Unfortunately, this never really materialised and Haddington began to move the ball at every opportunity.
James Ferguson crossed for the next try in the corner. His strong angles of running should have resulted in several more scores, only for the opportunities to be scorned.
Credit must also go to the forwards, who provided a solid platform throughout for the Haddington backs.
It was only fitting that No.8 Ronnie Spinks, who constantly broke the gain line, broke clear to score under the posts which Ferguson converted.
As Haddington began to ring the changes towards the end, it was Forrester who managed a converted push-over try for a consolation score.
But it was Haddington who completed the day’s scoring with one final try – a hat-trick for Adams, who followed up a testing up-and-under fromBowen.
This was a well-deserved victory for the young Scarlets, who have had an excellent season so far.
It therefore seems all the more strange that several talented individuals from this team were bypassed by the selectors and coaches of the Edinburgh under-16s’ team.
