Cartha QP 11 v 0 Haddington

Haddington brought the curtain down on their league campaign with a disappointing defeat against Cartha QP.

The Glasgow side, who are battling for survival in Premier Division Two, were the hungrier outfit throughout the match and deservedly won.

The Dumbreck pitch was heavy after a lot of rain in midweek, which led to both sides opting to play a limited game.

Cartha had most of the possession and territorial advantage in the first half, but were unable to capitalise with any points on the board until the 30th minute when their stand-off, White, scored with a penalty after Haddington had been penalised at the lineout.

This was all the home team had to show for their efforts at half time, as neither side looked like scoring a try.

The second half did not improve, with little constructive rugby being played by either side.

Mid-way through the second period, Cartha got the try their territorial advantage merited, although, slackness in Haddington’s midfield was as much the cause as Cartha creating the opportunity in itself. Winger, Nyangweso, was the home hero as he dived over to touch down for the decisive try. Although there were still 20 minutes to play, Haddington never looked like scoring.

As the minutes ticked away, Haddington tried to run out of their own 22, only to be penalised for holding on and stand-off, White, again stepped up to knock over another three points to the delight of the home support.

The game thankfully was brought to a conclusion to the relief of both sets of supporters, although for different reasons in a largely forgettable match.

Haddington can now look forward to their cup quarter-final.

Haddington played like a team with one eye on next weeks’ quarter final against Jedforest, however, on this showing, and regardless of nothing being at stake for Haddington yesterday, the player’s under-performed and can take nothing for granted next week.
