Back t0 basics for PL
Preston Lodge 15 v 22 Edinburgh University
PRESTON LODGE learned a lesson in back play from Edinburgh University in the National League Division One game at the Pennypit last Saturday.
The University’s backs broke the gain line at every attempt in the early stages.
After only six minutes, the visitors stormed through for the opening try.
PL began to come more into the game and it was the university’s turn to feel the pressure and they were caught offside on their own 22, allowing Kinross to narrow the lead and the score at half-time was 5-3 for the visitors.
Some poor PL tackling early in the second half allowed a gap to open through the midfield and an easy try under the posts.
The home side were then caught offside in front of the posts, from where full back Steele extended the visitors’ lead to 15-3.
PL fought back and prop Stuart McLean forced himself over for a try that Kinross converted.
An error and misunderstanding in the PL defence led to the lively university scrum-half, Jerry Tsang, to pounce and run in unopposed to score an easy try under the posts.
After a period of concerted pressure by PL, centre Ali Wood created an opening before setting up Kinross to score.
The home side were now looking for a converted try and a share of the points.
It looked as if Kinross would score as he suddenly broke from 25m out and headed for the line. But a good tackle stopped him inches short of the line
PL travel to bottom of the table Greenock tomorrow (Saturday) for their final league game of the season.
They will be hoping to finish the campaign in style with a good performance going into the Bowl quarter final.
