Relegation troubles worsen for the Burgh
St’s Melville 36 v 29 Musselburgh
MUSSELBURGH slipped further into relegation trouble after a closely fought Premier Division Two contest in Edinburgh last Saturday.
Burgh’s Leitch intercepted a pass in the third minute and ran 80 metres to touch down.
Four minutes later, Tweedie crossed the line for a try for the home side that was also not converted.
Stewart’s Melville went ahead on nine minutes, when Doneghan and Hendry set Marshall up to score.
Walls slotted a penalty to make the score 12– 8 for the home side.
Walls then scored a try to put the visitors ahead.
Stewart’s Melville hit back strongly and in the 35 minute, winger Gordon scored a try and, then two minutes later, Moran crossed the line for a converted try to make the half-time score 26-13 to the home side.
Burgh struck early in the second half when Doig touched down. Walls converted.
Walls then kicked a penalty from halfway to reduce the deficit to three points.
The fullback did the trick again three minutes later to draw Burgh level at 26– 26.
Moran slotted a penalty to edge the hosts back in front as the game entered the final quarter.
Walls levelled the scores again on 70 minutes.
Both sides now pushed for the winning score.
Burgh stole home lineout ball. Easton and Leitch made progress towards the home line but were unable to create the chance from which the visitors would score the decisive try.
Cook made a run into the home 22, but the home defence remained solid.
In what was a fiercely contested match, it was no surprise when tempers became frayed toward the end.
But both sides were intent on winning the game and no quarter was either asked for or was it given.
As the referee looked at his watch, some sustained home pressure resulted in Goudie touching down and Moran converting for a 36– 29 final score.
