Kennedy’s British hopes dashed in singles semi
East Lothian Indoor Bowling Club’s Scott Kennedy failed to add to his growing list of successes, when he was beaten by Ian Merrien, of the Channel Islands, in the semi-finals of the British Isles Championships at Perth.
Merrien was always on top and was well-worth his 21-13 victory. Kennedy admitted afterwards that his was a “lacklustre performance”, with his opponent a worthy winner.
A disappointing week for Kennedy was made worse by a comprehensive 23-8 defeat in the triples final by Wales – alongside East L othian teammates, Andrew Jeffrey and Billy Mellors.
Former outdoor cap Jim Pringle is making a strong pitch for the East Lothian IBC singles crown held for the past two seasons by reigning Scottish champion Scott Kennedy.
Pringle is through to the last four, having put in a brilliant performance to inflict a 21-4 demolition of the well fancied junior cap Derek Oliver. Pringle’s semi-final opponent has still to be decided.
Meanwhile the East Lothian contingent of Alex Marshall, Wayne Hogg, Scott Kennedy, Graham Robertson and Billy Mellors were part of a Scotland international bowls team that had to settle for runners-up spot behind England in last weekend’s Home International series at Perth IBC.
Last weekend also brought disappointment for the East Lothian duo, Glenn Blair and Ewan Fallen, who failed to capture the Scottish Youth Pairs title at Fraserburgh IBC. The young East Lothian pair won two of the three qualifying matches, but were pipped to top spot in their section by East Fife.
The spotlight turns to Fraser Pringle this weekend in his quest to win the prestigious Richard Corsie Henselite Junior Challenge at Midlothian IBC on Sunday.
Hopes are high within the East Lothian bowling ranks that Pringle can go all the way as he has been in sparkling form recently.
Haddington Bowling Club hosted the AGM of the East Lothian Bowling Association last Wednesday evening.
North Berwick member, Martin Wilson, was installed as president, taking over the reigns from Jim Johnstone.
Bobby McLaughlin of Haddington is the new vice-president while Arthur Bellany, George Haddow and Keith Fender remain in post as secretary, treasurer and match secretary, respectively.
Committee members of the association have also been appointed.
The meeting was informed that the association celebrates its 125th anniversary this year and a number of events to mark this historic landmark are planned during the forthcoming outdoor season.
East Lothian IBC will stage its AGM at Meadowmill on Monday, March 31, at 7pm
