Juniors round-up: Chris hopes to strike again in Scottish Cup
PROBLEMS continue to pile up in the East Region fixture schedule with the junior football card totally decimated once again at the weekend due to wintry weather.
By the time April comes along some clubs look sure to be playing two or three games each week due to match call-offs throughout January.
It’s the exact same fixture list as last Saturday as Musselburgh Athletic hope their Scottish Junior Cup fourth round tie at Kirkintilloch gets the go-ahead at the third time of asking, while Dunbar United have Blackburn United at home in the third round of the Fife & Lothians Cup.
In the South Division, Haddington Athletic entertain Edinburgh United, while Tranent Juniors have Broxburn Athletic as their visitors. Kick-offs 2pm.
MUSSELBURGH
MUSSELBURGH hitman Chris King is hoping he can repeat his scoring feat in the last round of the Scottish Cup with the goals that will see his side through against Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.
King, 24, ensured Burgh’s place in the fourth round with a stunning hat-trick against last year’s beaten finalists Kelty Hearts in a 4-2 win.
And he’s hoping he can do the business again if he’s selected to play.
“Hopefully we can do it, but it’s not going to be easy,” said the free-kick specialist.
“I’m confident that with the players we have coming back from injury and suspension we can go there and win.
“Hopefully I can get a goal whether it’s if I start or whether I come off the bench, but it doesn’t matter who scores as long as we win.
“We will meet Glenafton in the next round if we win, and speaking to people who watch them, they have said we would have a chance of going there and getting a result too, but we’re taking it one game at a time.’
Rob Roy’s Adamslie Park was ruled unplayable on Saturday following a morning pitch inspection, with snow falling at the time and it’s now almost three weeks since Burgh and Rob Roy drew 2-2 at Olive Bank after Davie McGlynn’s men had led 2-0 with five minutes left.
Influential winger Paul Tansey will be back from suspension and Danny Kelly will also be available for the match.
DUNBAR
THREE Saturdays ago the Seasiders lost at home to Blackburn United, which was their last outing, with the West Lothian men continuing an impressive run of victories that has sent them soaring towards the top end of the South Division.
Blackburn were due at New Countess Park again on Fife & Lothians Cup business, but a 9am inspection put paid to the tie with frost and surface water affecting the pitch.
The teams will try again tomorrow, with the winners proceeding to the quarter-finals of the competition.
HADDINGTON
THE Hi-Hi haven’t played a competitive match in six weeks, but hope regular action returns tomorrow (Saturday) when Edinburgh United are once again their visitors.
Although overnight conditions were not as bad as forecast there was still sufficient frost on Saturday morning to prompt a cancellation of the scheduled match against Edinburgh at Millfield.
Boss George Bowmaker will be without top scorer Davie Anderson for several weeks after the pacy striker suffered torn ankle ligaments against West Calder back on December 29.
TRANENT
FORESTERS Park’s drainage system could come under investigation following the postponement of Saturday’s match against Broxburn.
The drainage system on the pitch, which is only five months old, is giving the club some cause for concern after a number of call-offs in January, but manager Stevie McLeish is hoping the match will go ahead tomorrow to give his side a chance to build on the draw at Dalkeith the previous week.
There has been personnel changes at the club since the Dalkeith game, with goalkeeper Ross Combe and defender Kevin Robertson both leaving after only half a season. In come youngsters Chris Smith and Kenny Riding, both of whom have featured already as trialists.
