County badminton stars tops again

THERE was three double winners from the county at the Mid and East Lothian Badminton Doubles Championships at Dunbar Grammar last Friday.

Preston Lodge High School pupils Alex Dickenson and Ross Parkin and Knox Academy pupil Hannah Laing all won two titles each at the event to add more silverware to their already bursting trophy cabinets.

The under-14 girls doubles title was won comfortably by the experienced Knox Academy partnership of Hannah Laing and Megan Richardson, with Laing going on to win her second title in the mixed doubles later in the afternoon with Alasdair Hastings.

And it was an all Preston Lodge final in the under-14 boys section with Fraser Whillans and Euan Cameron defeating Andrew Morgan and Adam Vince 21-11.

In the under-16 age group, Alex Dickenson teamed up with fellow Preston Lodge pupil Laura Kerr to win the girls title against Jenni Ferguson and Beth Dougal from Beeslack Community High School.

There were hard-fought contests in the under-16 boys’ section throughout the all the pool matches with Preston Lodge pair Ross Parkin and Lewis Thomson taking the title from brothers Alasdair and Campbell Hastings (Knox Academy) who finished in second place, only two points ahead of Michael Fullerton and Michael Cranston from Ross High.

Dickenson and Parkin then finished the afternoon off with a three-set thriller by winning 22-20 in the final set of the under-16 mixed doubles final against Ross High pair Michael Fullerton and 13-year-old Kelly Sands.

East Lothian’s badminton development officer, Christine Black, was proud of her proteges who continue to go from strength to strength.

She said: “The young players in East Lothian are certainly making progress.

“They dominated the play in the previous week’s singles tournament at Meadowmill and did so again this time so I’m very proud of their achievements.

“They have worked extremely hard on their games to reach a very high standard of competition, which shows through at events such as these.

“I’d like to thank former Preston Lodge pupil Scott Hamilton for all his assistance throughout this event.”

A Mid and East Lothian Secondary School team will now be selected from the results of the event to represent their school at the Scottish Secondary Schools Championships on March 15 and 16 at Bells Sports Centre in Perth.

Final results – under-14 girls doubles: 1 Hannah Laing & Megan Richardson (Knox Academy); 2 Amy Kerr & Anna Devine (Preston Lodge); 3 Kelly Sands & Laura Imrie (Ross High).

Under-14 boys doubles: 1 Fraser Whillans & Euan Cameron (Preston Lodge); 2 Adam Vince & Andrew Morgan (Preston Lodge); 3 Alexander Caughey & Euan Russell (Preston Lodge).

Under-14 mixed doubles: 1 Alasdair Hastings & Hannah Laing (Knox Academy); 2 Euan Cameron & Amy Kerr (Preston Lodge); 3 Fraser Whillans & Anna Devine (Preston Lodge). B Mixed winners: Samuel Black & Kirsty Gray (Dunbar Grammar).

Under-16 girls doubles: 1 Alex Dickenson & Laura Kerr (Preston Lodge); 2 Jenni Ferguson & Beth Dougal (Beeslack Community High).

Under-16 boys doubles: 1 Ross Parkin & Lewis Thomson (Preston Lodge); 2 Alasdair Hastings & Campbell Hastings (Knox Academy); 3 Michael Fullerton & Michael Cranston (Ross High).

Under-16 mixed doubles: 1 Ross Parkin & Alex Dickenson (Preston Lodge); 2 Michael Fullerton & Kelly Sands (Ross High).

Longniddry Primary school were also winners for the third year running at the Mid and East Primary Schools Quaich at Meadowmill last week.

They defeated both Cockenzie Primary and Law Primary and will now go forward to represent Mid and East Lothian at the Scottish Schools Primary Quaich, which will be held on Saturday, February 23 at Wishaw Sports Centre.
