Preston's unbeaten run comes to an end

WHITEHILL didn’t have Preston Athletic’s welfare in mind at the Pennypit on Saturday as they ended the East Lothian side’s seven-match unbeaten league run with a 2-1 win.

It took the visitors 13 minutes to open the scoring after Pryde’s free-kick was cleared by the Preston defence, but Andy Christie picked the ball up on the edge of the area and drilled the ball back towards goal.

The ball took a slight deflection on its way towards goal, but it made little difference to Christie’s strike, which was headed well wide of Gilpin’s grasp into the bottom right hand corner.

But Preston hit back within two minutes when Wilson’s free-kick from the left wing was headed in at the near post by striker Stevie Laidlaw.

Wilkes and Malone both missed first half chances to recapture the lead for Whitehill. Malone also had the ball in the back of the net in the 34th minute, but it was ruled out for offside.

Preston’s best chance of the second half came in the 50th minute. Baillie’s diagonal ball found Wilson whose first touch strike was well saved by Swain in goal.

Whitehill grabbed the winner with 10 minutes remaining when Pryde fed the ball to Walker who whipped in a cross.

Preston managed to clear the ball, but once again Christie was waiting on the edge of the box, and struck a sweet volley into the roof of the net.

Preston manager Stevie Myatt said after the defeat: “Our league record so far has been good though and we were unbeaten with seven played.

“This result obviously changes that but we have a big Saturday ahead when we are away to Spartans.”

Preston Athletic: Gilpin, McColl, Baillie, Costello, Craig F Scott, McAuley, Newall, Lockhart, Miller, Laidlaw, Wilson. subs: Hall, Barton, Cowie, Craig Scott.
