‘IRONMAN’ George Armstrong from Tranent added yet another trophy to his collection by winning the over-60 title in the Majorca Marathon.

Tough George, 68, a former second row forward for Haddington Rugby Club, has now completed more than 130 marathons over a period of almost 40 years, which has earned him the Ironman nickname from his HELP (Haddington and East Lothian Pacemakers) team-mates.

His time of 3 hrs 44 mins in the Majorcan sunshine was the best in the event for two years.

He first ran for Lewisvale Spartans (now Musselburgh ADAC) and joined HELP in 1983.

His best time for a marathon is two hours, 36 minutes prior to reaching 40, and has completed 99 of his marathons in under three-and-a-half hours.

The retired builder is also a qualified JogScotland leader and takes training groups on a regular basis at Meadowmill Sport Centre.

Two other Musselburgh ADAC stalwarts also took part in the EAC 5k event circumnavigating Arthur’s Seat. Gordon Eadie finished 55th in 22:25, and Stewart McConnel was just one place and two seconds behind.
