Boys raise £1,000 after gruelling Murrayfield run

HADDINGTON Rugby Club’s under-16 side showed their dedication to the club by running from Scotland’s ‘home of rugby’ at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium to Neilson Park on Saturday to raise cash.

When they landed at their own home of rugby three hours and four minutes after setting off, the youngsters presented the match ball for Saturday’s first team encounter against Aberdeen to Haddington captain Donald Snodgrass, which they carried with them all the way.

And after counting the pennies from the gruelling sponsored run they found they had raised just over £1,000 for a Welsh rugby tour in 2008.

Coach Kevin Bowen was delighted at the effort of his young team.

He said: “They carried the match ball all the way from Edinburgh in just over three hours and raised a lot of money.

“It was a tremendous effort by the boys and I’d also like to thank Don Prentice and Ian Glass. Without them it wouldn’t have been possible.”

The first team went on to beat Aberdeen 6-5 on the day with the lucky ball, which was the Scarlets’ first win in three games in Premiership Division 2.

Haddington lie fourth in the table.
