Swede dreams are made of these
THE captain of Musselburgh Windsor Girls’ under-17 side has made her international debut for Scotland against Sweden at St Johnstone’s McDiarmid Park.
Ross High School pupil Kim Borthwick, from Tranent, was the only representative from the Lothians in the 18-strong squad and was brought on for the final 10 minutes of a 0-0 draw, but made a massive impact.
The striker almost broke the deadlock against the talented Swedes after her introduction with two fierce strikes.
Her first shot from the edge of the box was well saved by the Swedish keeper, and moments later a thrilling run which started in her own half saw her evade three challenges before unleashing a tremendous drive that struck the crossbar with the keeper well beaten.
Her run and shot drew thunderous applause from the large crowd, which contained Kim’s family, friends and team-mates who were all there to witness her landmark appearance.
“Playing for your country is something every player dreams of and when I pulled on my Scotland top it was by far the proudest moment of my life and something I’ll never forget,” said Borthwick.
“But I wouldn’t have achieved this without the hard work and support of my team-mates and everyone else at Musselburgh Windsor Girls.”
Windsor coach Tam Milne believes her performance will earn her another call-up to the Scots squad for the game later this month in the first-ever Under-17 European championships against host nation Croatia.
He said: “Although Kim only got the final 10 minutes, she can be very proud of her performance and I think she’s done enough to put herself into contention for a starting place in the next match.”
