A COUNTY police officer – a former Musselburgh Honest Lad – has been suspended from duty after being charged with drugs offences.

PC Christopher McGinn, 28, of Prestonpans, appeared on petition at Haddington Sheriff Court on Monday and was charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. He is also accused of perverting the course of justice.

David Gare, 27, of Musselburgh, appeared alongside McGinn facing charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

Both made no plea or declaration and the case was committed for further examination. They were remanded in custody.

A police spokesman confirmed that McGinn, who is originally from Musselburgh and was elected Honest Lad in 1999, had been suspended from duty.

Lothian and Borders Police assistant chief constable Iain Livingstone said: “The force will make every effort to bring to justice all those involved in the illegal use of drugs.”
