Fifty years on still strong
AN ORMISTON couple will celebrate 50 years of marriage on Saturday after finding love on a bus when they were just 18 years-old.
George and Christine Watt, 71 and 72 respectively, will enjoy a night out on Saturday at The Coalgate in Ormiston with their son and daughter to honour their golden wedding anniversary.
The couple first met when they sat together on a bus from Tranent to Haddington on their way to go dancing at the Corn Exchange.
Christine sat next to George and after he struck up a conversation with her; later that night, he asked her out for adate.
Although the both lived and grew up in Ormiston, they attended different schools, with George at Tranent Public School and Christine at St. Martin’s in Tranent.
George said: “We stayed together after our first date and didn’t see any other people. I knew she was the one.”
They were married in 1958 in St. Martin’s Church and, in the following years, had two children, George and Laureen, who are now 39 and 37 years -old.
The couple set up home initially in Clark Buildings, Ormiston, for 19 years until they moved to their current address, in Limeylands Road. Although they are now both retired, George worked as a miner and Christine worked on East Mains Farm in Ormiston.
They both enjoy spending time with their grandson, Ryan, who is five years old.
The golden couple say the secret to a lasting marriage is ‘happiness and understanding”.
